I feel that the positive reviews here must be fake, because this is not the school you want your child going to. The teachers try, but the leadership is horrible and they have been retaining a large number of students in order to have those children raise the scores for the school to get it off the bad schools list. When is the last time you heard of five children being retained per class? The principal will not meet with parents who have concerns. They will accuse your child of lying when they are being physically bullied. I wouldn't send a dog to this school. It's a shame bc there are some nice teachers and some nice kids there and they deserve better. But of course, out of control kids rule the class- everybody has to suffer bc of one or two kids who should not be in a normal classroom setting. But those kids get away with it bc of special needs, while everyone else suffers. I withdrew my child after two teachers had quit her class by November, and these children had no teacher. The principal never met with the parents, never sent home a letter- nothing. Disgraceful.
My son is in the G&T program at PS 72 which started last year. We do not live in this neighborhood so I drive my son to school every morning. I must say that Mrs. Colon genuinely cares for all of her students. She gives out her personal mobile number to the parents in case they need to reach her. She listens to the parents concerns and takes action. I can only speak for the G&T class, but his first year has been remarkable. The children in the class finished the school year at 1st -2nd grade reading level while in kindergarten. The children where learning things beyond their years (i.e. multiplication, addition, subtraction, writing journals, STEM projects etc.). Is the school perfect? No. There is no such thing as perfection. Once parents understand that there are pros and cons to everything, then you can pick your battles. The teacher is amazing. She comes up with many creative activities to keep the children on their toes. The kids love going to school and look forward to learning something new each day. The children have homework every day which includes writing, math and reading. In addition, they have STEM projects throughout the year. I am happy to have made the decision to send my son to the G&T program at PS 72.
you would be better off not even sending your kids to school then picking this one.
I was giving many mix reviews about this school when moved to area….however, as a member of the community and active tax payer, I choose to support our school.Because of the financial demographics in the school area, PS 72 I am pretty sure that the school receives funds that are only there to better our children education, however many parents fail to do their job and solely rely on a school to raised theirs kids, perhaps some of the negative reviews comes from those parents.I honestly think Mrs. Colon runs a tight ship, she is a very personal, an approachable principal that sincerely cares about the kids, however I feel that she can use more support from her staff. Because the review needs to be an overall review I wished the staff can understand that it s vital that they work together and support each other on all efforts, as this is only will change the view of our school. Some one once said “when you do what you love you never work”, some of the teachers in this school show how much they love their job and the students, and are those teachers that are making a positive mark. However, there are those that should review their career’s path and make a change, rather than allow their negativity or bitterness cloud a child’s day.I support our school, it is a good school with room to become great, but only if we all come together and support!!
