The district is small, safe, and the kids are--for the most part--kind to each other. As for academics, the district historically has not enforced rigor and eschews internal academic competition: "We aren't --and don't want to be Scarsdale" might be the motto. Croton prides itself on its more laid-back, supportive, artistic and individualistic environment. In the past, this has led to a lack of academic challenge for the strongest students. In the ninth and tenth grades, there are no honors or accelerated classes except in math. By junior and senior years, however, students have a fair number of AP options, and each year a handful of top students who are self-starters and have sought out challenge are admitted to the most competitive colleges (e.g., Georgetown, Amherst, Penn, Harvard, Cornell, Cooper Union). In the last two or three years, a handful of students have double accelerated in math in middle school (PVC); these students will enter the high school at the A2/trig level, a rarity in Westchester county. PVC is institutionalizing a math-at-your-own-pace program that will facilitate higher achievement in math and science.
Does anyone know where it is possible to view detailed college matriculation data for this school? We are considering a move to Croton and this is a key consideration but I've been unable to find it so far.
The vice principal is one swell guy, truly the bee's knees. He also has an excellent sense of style. Go to the school now just so that he can grace your presence. I promise it's worth it.
If your child needs special ed services, be ready to fight for them. For the average child, it's a great school system.
