As an MHS graduate who is currently teaching in a different high school, I find myself constantly wishing the school I teach in now were more like Mahopac. The district provides countless opportunities for the students. The school schedule is set up in a way that maximizes student focus and involvement. Having the traditional bell schedule where classes are under 45 minutes long shows an understanding of the high school-aged clientele who typically find it difficult to concentrate for long periods of time. Shorter classes allow students to focus on learning and minimizes disruptions and behavioral problems in the process. MHS provides after-school buses at both 3pm and 5pm to allow all students the chance to stay after for one hour (2-3pm) to get extra help or attend a club meeting. All sports begin at 3pm meaning athletes do not have to make a decision between clubs, extra help or practice. This is very rare to see and in my opinion makes a huge difference! The student athletes are held to high standards and most even complete community service projects together through the Student Athletic Council. The teachers at MHS are amazing and dedicated individuals and I have maintained contact with many of them to this day. The building works together well to run efficiently and effectively. The hall monitors, I now realize, are incredible. These ladies were able to strike fear in all kids to make sure they were where they were supposed to be in a way the badged security officers in my current school cannot replicate. The school felt like a family and the community is very much intertwined with the high school. I loved my time at MHS and truly thank all involved to help me become who I am today and for helping to accomplish all I have. I was well prepared for my college coursework and for taking on leadership positions at my university due to the well-rounded education I received at MHS. We truly need more schools like it!

Both of my children graduated from Mahopac High School. They are both outstanding, productive and successful adults. I owe part of their success to this school. I would be thrilled to have my grandchildren attend this school someday.
