I believe the children are still too young to take on the amount of independent learning that T.J. Connor expects them to do. I would like to see more engagement on teaching lessons and reviewing them afterwords. Also, the teaching methods are based more on just getting correct answers and not really explaining what they are learning. You as a parent would have to make the initiative to explain to your child the meaning of the material, than them just knowing what the answer is. There are great resources available to the students, such as EACH student has a ThinkPad assigned to them, they have Smart Apps that teach the students and the S.T. Math App can almost replace for example the role of a Math Teacher, however Intervention teachers for Math are greatly needed! The staff are friendly. The PTA are very involved with the students, however their fundraisers are practically the same as other Districts and makes fundraising more competitive. I believe the PTA should communicate with other neighboring Districts on their fundraisers to offer more variety in Monroe County. The PTA is great at doing events for the Students and making sure the Holidays are celebrated! The teachers escort the students to their busses or crosswalk and they remain with students who are car side pick-up which is great for the safety of the children! The nurse is awesome with students who are sick, have allergies or hurt & she will call you to let you know if anything happens to your child or concerns, she will request for you to pick up your child when they are ill, which is very appreciative. The school cafeteria food is great and on Friday’s they have Salvatore’s Pizza! The school library highly encourages reading and offers Scholastic Book Fairs in the Library! The school has security cameras and often have the Police visit the students to teach the D.A.R.E. program. The school recognizes the role of the male figure, as there are students who come from broken families or do not have a male figure to look up to, every beginning of the school year male figures are asked to volunteer their time, like fathers and grandfathers to greet the students with a high-five or to give encouraging words as they enter the school! Diversity is embraced and respected. In memory of the belated student Kael Nicolosi a friendly buddy bench was placed on the playground.
TJ Connor is the perfect little elementary school. My children have all excelled academically and have been pushed to join extracurricular activities that I feel they may avoid in a bigger school. It's a home away from home for them, surrounded by good friends and excellent teachers.
I have always had a good experience with my children attending this school. Teachers are friendly and helpful. The curriculum is geared toward State testing which is disappointing.
I am an educator (not connected with the school district) and therefore speak with an informed perspective beside that of being just a parent. I am amazed by the low Great Schools rating for TJ Connor. My child did very well in this school, received very good scores on the state standardized testing, and had a great relationship with his teachers, who were very engaged and concerned about all the students' progress. Wheatland-Chili is a much better district than the Great Schools rating indicates. This is evinced by the fact that the high school (which also received the same Great School rating) has for two years in a row received the US News and World Report's Silver medal ranking, which measures the school in relation to other schools not only in New York State but across the nation.
