Involved with school 4 years before leaving. If your child has allergies or ADHD, beware. Asked teachers repeatedly not to give certain foods to my child, and they repeatedly ignored me (Why are teachers giving children food?!). ADHD child was mentally abused by one teacher (2nd grade) and given up on in 3rd grade. I would think educational professionals would be better trained to handle? Other child had no issues, did very well. However, when I pulled her anyway to be with her brother, discovered she could only memorize and not think for herself or apply anything she had learned. I know first hand because we opted to homeschool instead. I was shocked at how little both children could do. 3rd grader left South unable to write a paragraph. In 6 months, he could write a 5 paragraph paper and caught up. Sadly, the school has perfected "teach to the test" mentality Only 2 of the 6 teachers we were exposed to seemed to teach well. There is a new principal as of 2014 so hopefully he can turn things around. Really hoping this is the case as those kids deserve so much more. :( Note, 1 star principal rating was for the OLD one that just left. She refused to meet with me.

I have only one thing to say about South Elementary - PUBLIC SCHOOL. If you expect that they will challenge your child enough or even teach your child anything beyond what your child already knows, this school is not for you. Children who are stronger academically are separated from the rest of the class and are paid minimum attention, while teachers are busy working with others. The school pretends to appreciate parent involvement, yet creates a million obstacles for a parent to get involved. God forbid you have a child with food intolerance - they will take it into extreme and deprive your child of participation in classroom parties. Yes: my child sat all alone with a book to read during regular school days, separated from the rest of the class, and he was all alone during the birthday and other parties, watching other children share a cake that he could easily eat without any harm. They are just a bunch of power-hungry union freaks who care nothing about children - only about covering their backs. BEWARE! Thank goodness, there are so many choices of good quality schools - don't buy South Elementary fake smiles!
