As a parent of two children attending this school I am happy to say this will be the last year they are there. Faculty has zero control over what is going on at this school. I walked in to my youngest child’s class during the national anthem to see kids wandering about and sitting not paying any attention. My oldest daughter comes home everyday and tells me about a girl in her class being called the R word over and over and the teacher does NOTHING. The principals are just as useless in assisting with anything going on in the school and constantly gloss over any concerns you may have.

My daughter excelled at this school. I miss them a lot. We had to move and her new school does not help students who learn differently or help with bullying. The teachers at hanahan let me know every time anything was off with her behavior and did everything they could to prevent bullying. They helped with her learning issues and did great with keeping me informed so that I could more easily help her at home. The teachers went above and beyond to ensure she succeeded and made it quite apparent that they actually care about their students.

I am appalled to say that I am a former employee of Hanahan Elementary School. The school has gotten so massive that the administration has no idea what is going on within the classroom walls. There is a major lack of communication, which causes confusion among teachers when it comes to basics such as dismissal times, homework requirements, grading policies, and student rewards. Some teachers believe they are required to assign a worksheet for homework each night, while others never assign written homework. Instead of asking for clarity, the teachers have resorted to gossiping amongst themselves as to what they believe the policies are. It is terrible feeling when even the most tenured educators are afraid to confront the administration for these answers. I would not recommend this school to prospective teachers or to parents of prospective students.

I have a second grader in this school, a niece in kinder, and a nephew in fourth grade. The teachers are fantastic and the administration responds quickly to concerns. The school can use some investment in their gym because contrary to what people may think (PE being held in the multipurpose room) the classes are actually held in the trailers. The PTA is extremely active and perhaps this is something they can invest their fund raising too. Otherwise a very student friendly environment with teachers who hold the students to high expectations but who manage to inject a great deal of fun in the learning. Traffic is terrible but this should ease up in the future - there is only one way in and out of that school and paired with the railroad and Trident Technical College nearby it gets pretty packed at peak times so be warned! :) Great school though.
