I was an 8th grade math tutor at Martin for 3 school years, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12. Granted, I was assigned to class where students where in need of assistance. My experience was that the teachers were VERY committed to their students but turnover was very high. The administration appears to be VERY scattered, at least in the math department and totally and completely focused on test prep. We would frequently get short notice that the class schedule had been changed and that we were note need that particular week. This was VERY VERY frustrating because it was also clear that the parents were uninvolved and even threaten by their child's success. Lesson plan was fraction, percentages, and basic geometry but the students struggled with multiplication/division. I eventually stopped tutoring because I felt that I had little or no impact! Intervention, with parents, administration AND parents needs to happen earlier. Most of the students had already given up all hope by 8th grade. Very very sad.....

I attended Martin several years ago, so my review may be a bit out of date. A lot of the problems I saw there was a lack of parental support. Students had a bad attitude towards school because their parents gave them no encouragement or support. But the teachers were there for the students. I got all the support and attention I needed, made straight As, was in choir, played sports, and had several high school credits by the end of 8th grade. If Martin could get better parental and community support, and some more money from the school district to provide good school programs, i think it has a lot of potential
