We had a great experience and love that my child was exposed to learning a second language and how much this helps stimulate her brain.

My boys have attended Shearn for the past 4 years. We chose to attend Shearn because of the dual language program. Personally, I have enjoyed my experience at Shearn. Each year I ask my boys if they would like to transfer to a different school and each year they say, "No!" They started Shearn in Kinder and this year they will be going to the 4th grade!!! Shearn may not have the high marks of other schools (partly because of absences, etc.), but the staff wants and makes an effort to ensure that every child is successful.

One of my daughters will be entering 2nd grade next year, the other kinder. We have greatly benefitted from attending Shearn, which is also our neighborhood school. I went on magnet tours of other schools before ultimately choosing to attend Shearn, and what struck me most back then is what I'm still drawn to. Besides the data touting benefits of dual-language education, I love that Shearn has a dedicated librarian and music teacher. It is easy to be involved and 'known', and I've found teachers and staff very helpful, caring, and open to new ideas. There has been turnover in past years, but to be frank that's an HISD problem and not particular to this school (though Title 1 schools do present challenges to educators). Our principal retired in Dec after 12 committed years of service - our new principal, Ms. Romero, has a dual-language background and a great spirit, and we have high hopes of furthering academic achievement and encouraging the kids and families of Shearn to be proud of their school.

This school has been great. I have had a wonderful experience with all of the teachers my son has had since PK to now. Yes there some flaws here an there but for the most part everything has gone pretty well. The only negative thing I have is their timing. Always seems that time is against them for events in school. I would wish to have more school spirit. Besides that I love the staff and teachers.
