The magnet programs are phenomenal! You learn a lot from them.
West is one of the few schools in RISD to earn distinctions in all of the 7 possible categories. The teachers and staff really seem to understand how to reach kids during this sensitive transition period in their lives. They also promote a true arts & technology culture by being on the forefront of new programs like a maker's space at the school and impromptu performances during lunch. Students enjoy going to school here - so refreshing!
The school itself is very well in helping students with academics. Of course, some teachers vary on how they teach and it can either be a positive or negative effect towards the students. For example, some math teachers will not let kids turn in work if they are sick for even one day and will either make them come in before or after School to complete the assignment(s). Since I lived far away from this school, I did not have the privilege to come in before school since my parent has work early and cannot take me in the morning for just one assignment. I can stay after school, but the school administration does not do a good job at telling students what late bus they need to get on or if that bus is even going to show up that day. One time, I stayed after school to help with a project and when I waited for the buses, they never came. I ended up finding out later that the buses don't come that day, but the administration failed to ever tell the bus students. There isn't any bullying in the school, except the occasional fight which then causes the administration to punish students that had nothing to do with it. The students, mostly, are decent people that will respect you if you don't do anything towards them. I, myself, was never bothered except by some annoying students, but most people are never bothered. The subjects are taught well and the Pre-AP classes have the right amount of challenge to them. The orchestra and band are very good, especially the wind symphony and advanced orchestra. Your school life, though will vary person to person but if you live far away from this school, it can make your life very tiring. I have to admit, that this junior high is much better than some other junior highs in the district and the staff is very nice. Another complaint is, the passing periods are 3 MINUTES. There is no time to go to the bathroom and in most classes, the teachers won't let you go. This is incredibly unfair, especially for girls(IT'S MIDDLE SCHOOL). It's also unfair because at another junior High in this district has 6 minute passing periods. this is horrible because, spoiler alert, girls in middle school have periods. and if the administration isn't going to acknowledge this, then at least I can. Also, other junior highs in this district *cough* Westwood *cough* *cough* have 4+ minutes and the students are allowed to carry backpacks.
Amazing, creative, technologically-advanced magnet school of distinction (7 out of 7 in fact). Students are cared for and supported and teachers are some of the best of the best. One of the best junior high schools in DFW!
