A Message from Our Superintendent, Mr. King Davis On behalf of Wharton ISD, we are excited as we enter the 2014-15 school year. The administrative team has spent the summer months planning and improving the overall instructional program that will focus on our number one goal of raising student achievement with quality instruction. We are extremely excited to begin the inaugural year of the ROAR Academy Early College High School. In collaboration with Wharton County Junior College, we enrolled our first group of 30 freshmen who have been selected to enter the program. This program will allow students the opportunity to earn up to 60 hours of college credit before graduating high school. We are also working to increase our academic and Career & Technical Education (CTE) dual credit offerings at Wharton High School. A few additional offerings include a comprehensive welding program with NCCER certification, and Health Science with an opportunity to attain a certified nurse s aide certification. WISD will continue to expand course offerings to meet the needs of our students. Also, we look forward to supporting our students as they compete and participate in their respective extracurricular activities. We are excited about the upstart of our new boy s and girl s soccer program. Please come out to show your support. At the elementary campuses, we will continue our Literacy Initiative, which started in the spring semester of the 2013-14 school year. We are committed to ensuring that every WISD student is a proficient reader by third grade. All of our campuses will be enhancing our intervention efforts to maintain positive supports for our students during the school day. Additionally, attendance will be an area of emphasis going into the 2014-15 school year. Student attendance is a critical factor impacting student success in school. From the first day of school to the last, the more time students have with their teachers in the classroom setting means improved academic growth and better attitudes toward school. Campuses will closely monitor daily attendance, including late arrivals and early outs. We expect our students to be present every day, ready to learn. I encourage parents and community members to meet with teachers and administration, become a mentor or volunteer, and participate in school district activities. We look forward to an awesome year filled with learning and growing. WE ARE WHARTON One Team, One Vision, Together on a Mission! King R. Davis Superintendent Wharton Independent School District
