I'm not sure why this school has such a low rating. When I went there, I had really positive experiences with my teachers, the "mean ones" of which I would describe as tough but fair. My guidance counselor was really helpful in getting me a waiver for the SAT, helping me choose the best classes for my college interests and guiding me through the college application process. I'm now at VCU and feel like I was pretty well prepared when I got here. I didn't have much contact with the administration when it comes to disciplinary issues, but I rarely felt like the discipline I saw and heard about was unfair and definitely not discriminatory. This school has a very diverse student body and, as a Latina student, I do not believe that there is discrimination against minorities and people of color by the staff and administrators at this school. LC Byrd deserves a much better rating than this.

My child graduated from LC Bird in 2007. At the time the school was a very highly rated school. Once Matoaca high was built redistricting contributed a huge change in the social economic makeup of the student population which was detrimental to Bird. Prior to this there was a good blend of all demographics. Parental participation in events and school functions decreased dramatically. This also caused a number of good teachers to leave as well. I read of the high accredited in chesterfield county and it seems only Bird and Meadowbrook are the only ones not accredited. This translates into lower home values and less families willing to live in the Bird district. If they do live in the district they make sure their children go to specialty school elsewhere in the county. We loved our Bird experience when our children were there but I would not now want my children to attend that school until scores are up and accreditation is obtained and sustained. The focus of the school now seems to be on winning the next football championship.

I was a student here. I graduated in 2015. The administration at Bird is terrible. One member tried to use fear of being suspended for minor disruptions or having a phone or hat out on many occassions. I never had this happen to me as I aleays kept to myself. The Administrators had favorites. The Athletes often had a easier time getting away with stuff compared to the regular students. I am pretty sure the one said employee working in administration bullied a teacher of mine with anxiety and depression causing her to quit. Every teacher I talked to hated her. Every student hated her more. Besides that they covered education in a very bad way. Where the teachers were forced to only prepare us for SOL testing. Because of this we didnt learn alot. We were just forced to remember stuff until the tests were over. The art courses here seem pretty bad. I would visit my friends classes and sketch on my off periods. Bullying here outside the administration seems okay. It was in no ways terrible. There was alot of bickering and teenage drama but thats it. The teachers and other staff were friendly for the most part and tried to help students as much as possible. I even recieved a graduation present from a member of the lunch staff. I would have proper discussions with teachers like an adult. To end this. The teachers here cared but were held back through sol study just like how the administration here will hold your child back if they arent athletes. This is just my opinion and my experience. Im sure others have different experiences.
