Where to Live

With so few homes in Alvarado, opportunities are limited within the neighborhood proper, which covers the intersection of Hoover and Central Avenues, then east to Seventh Street and south to McDowell Road. Most of the homes here were constructed in the early 20th century - from 1924 to 1932 -- and are accented with the lazy sway of palm trees, low-level lawns, and narrow streets that accentuate the design and architecture of the homes.

Where to Eat

Just a short distance from Downtown Phoenix, Alvarado is convenient to all the bustling urban nightlife of the city, while the surrounding areas offer a diverse choice of everything from street food to fine dining at some of the best country clubs and resorts in the state. There are few restaurants in the neighborhood itself, with most of the options being along 7th Street. Even though the culinary options are few, they pack a big punch, with diners, vegan restaurants, Mexican, and casual eateries being just a handful of the options in Alvarado.

What You'll See

With close-knit neighbors and a strong sense of pride and protectiveness, residents delight in their homes and take great care to maintain and safeguard their character. There is a very strong sense of shared community and teamwork to beautify and improve the neighborhood whenever possible. The homes are stunning, with diverse architectural influences, including Colonial Spanish, Revival, Craftsman, and Mission styles. Alvarado is also home to the Heard Museum, showcasing one of the best collections of Native American artifacts and Southwestern art.

Friday Night Fun

Start off with a drink at one of the restaurants along 7th Street or Central Avenue before venturing to the Phoenix Theatre for a Broadway-style show. Residents can also gather in Monterey Park for a BBQ with friends or join a game on the baseball diamond.

The Perfect Sunday

Start off the day with brunch along 7th Street or McDowell Road before venturing to the newest exhibit at the Heard Museum. Pack up a picnic and head to either Monterey Park or Townsend Park. Wrap up the weekend by getting some shopping done along McDowell Road.
