Oak Brook is an affluent Chicago suburb with a collection of quiet subdivisions and luxury gated communities. The village is known as a local shopping destination thanks to the expansive outdoor Oakbrook Center. And, until recently, the suburb was known as the home of McDonald’s headquarters. Since the company pulled up its suburban stake in favor of the city’s Fulton Market, there has been plenty of speculation over what will be done with the vacant corporate campus. Now, it seems Oak Brook could be getting a new gated community where the golden arches once stood.

Developer PulteGroup is proposing a plan to build 170 luxury townhomes in a gated community on the 34-acre site, a fraction of the total land still owned by McDonald’s, according to Crain’s Chicago Business. But, the developer has some competition. The Oak Brook Park District hopes to buy the land and preserve it as open space, according to the report. McDonald’s appears to be moving forward with PulteGroup as the buyer, but the developer would still need to secure zoning approval to move forward with its gated community plan.

While the future of the proposed community is uncertain, Oak Brook is still home to many other gated communities. Here’s a look at a few of these prestigious and private residential enclaves.

Typical homes in Illinois

Forest Gate

Designed as a community for active adults, Forest Gate is a newer gated community with single-family homes built between 2000 and 2014. The median sale price in the neighborhood is over $1 million, according to Neighborhoods.com. The sizable homes range from 2,780 to 4,047 square feet with two to four bedrooms and bathrooms.

Built around several scenic ponds, the community has a walking and biking trail, giving residents plenty of space to enjoy the outdoors. Forest Gate is also located right across the street from the Oak Brook Park District Recreation Center, which houses a gym and an aquatic center.

Heritage Oaks

Heritage Oaks is a smaller gated community with slightly more competitive pricing than some of its neighboring gated communities. The median home sale price in this neighborhood is in the high $900s. The neighborhood’s large single-family homes were built between 1982 and 2003, and square footage ranges from 4,218 to 8,388.

The community is located along Meyers Road, which conveniently leads right to I-88—an ideal route for commuters who work in the city.

Midwest Club

The Midwest Club is undoubtedly one of Oak Brook’s more lavish gated communities. The median home sale price is $1.2 million, and the community has plenty of amenities behind its gates for residents to enjoy.

The 231-acre neighborhood is built on land that formerly served as a 36-hole golf course. The homes built on this beautifully landscaped spot date back to 1980 through 2010. As the luxury name suggests, the single-family homes are large in size—you can find homes ranging from 3,710 square feet to 10,886 square feet.

When it comes to amenities, the Midwest Club has its own clubhouse, pool, and tennis courts. These facilities are closed to the public for the exclusive use of residents. If you’re craving some time on the green, the gated community is located near the golf course at Butterfield Country Club.

Oak Brook Club

If you’re looking for a smaller place to call home in Oak Brook, Oak Brook Club may be the answer. This is a gated community of condos with square footage that ranges from 1,282 to 3,098. This community of attached homes also offers more reasonable pricing with a median sale price in the high $300s.

This neighborhood is older than some of the suburb’s other gated communities with construction ranging to 1969 to 1978. Oak Brook Club is located on 25 acres of manicured land featuring gardens, ponds, and fountains. Residents can also enjoy their own pool.

Oak Brook Club has an ideal location for getting out in the community. It’s right across the street from the shopping mall and minutes away from Drury Lane Theatre, an Oak Brook Terrace venue that hosts regular stage productions and houses an adjoining restaurant.
