A Rat Cafe Opens in San Francisco. Finally.
The Black Rat Cafe is not the name of a new bloodthirsty cinematic thriller. Instead, San Francisco’s answer to the cat cafe gives you exactly what it promises: Coffee and rats.
The pop-up idea comes from the minds behind Fisherman Wharf’s historic San Francisco Dungeon attraction. Don’t worry: There are codes and health measures in place. The Dungeon’s Matthew Clarkson tells SF Eater they are “following all food code and hygiene requirements.”
Patrons will be led into the basement of the Dungeon, where tables are set much like one would find in any other cafe around the city. Coffee, tea, and pastries, all prepared and brought in from off-site, are provided and then removed before the furry varmints arrive.
Like the Kit Tea Cafe of Hayes Valley and Cat Town of Oakland, there is method to the madness for Clarkson. The aforementioned cafes have become trendy spots to dine and hang out with rescue cats. Surprisingly, rats make great pets and, as he notes, are as “clean as a cat or a dog.” California rat rescue and adoption agency Rattie Ratz has housed over 250 domestic pet rats since its founding in 1998 and will provide restaurant-goers the opportunity to adopt one of the lovable orphans.
The experience will run you $50 per person, but if there’s any city where this experience will be welcomed, it’s probably San Francisco. Like the saying goes, when the cat's away, the rats will play.
