In 2015, Amazon opened up shop in Santa Cruz, hiring a couple dozen people to work on the mobile application for Amazon Marketplace vendors. Now, the firm’s presence in the surf city has increased to 100 employees working on hardware, software, and mobile shopping, according to Silicon Beat.

The new techies in town are adding pressure to an already competitive housing market. Residents can expect to pay at least $2,000 a month in rent on a one-bedroom apartment, and the average home sells for more than $800,000.

However, there has not been much local opposition to Amazon’s presence in Santa Cruz. This stands in contrast to the Bay Area, where resistance to the expansion of tech companies has even led to company shuttle buses being vandalized.

According to a report by the Silicon Valley Business Journal, locals believe Amazon could jump-start a tech scene in the city, attracting talent and venture capital to Santa Cruz.

Amazon currently has 17 job openings in Santa Cruz.
