A 7.85-acre vacant lot in Pilsen is now the potential future site for the ambitious ParkWorks project, according to DNAinfo. The mixed-use development project will bring residential and commercial space to the site that sits between 16th Street, 18th Street, Newberry Avenue, and Peoria Street.

The developer, Property Markets Group, has proposed 10,000 square feet of retail space and a significant amount of affordable housing, though the exact number of units has yet to be announced. Additionally, the ParkWorks project would bring solar panels and rooftop gardens to this Pilsen site.

The development holds the promise of more jobs and amenities for Pilsen residents. Property Markets Group intends to hire many property and retail workers directly from the neighborhood. Once finished, the ParkWorks development would offer residents access to public courtyards and an art walk project along Peoria Street.

Property Markets Group owns the site and has released a proposal for the ParkWorks development, but zoning issues could slow the project’s progress. The developer will have to find a way to rezone the property to allow residential development, a move that will be met with some opposition. Alderman Danny Solis (25th) has previously blocked one of the developer’s residential plans for the lot. The future of Pilsen’s largest open site remains unsure.
