Artist Andrew Ward Turns Trash to Treasure in 'The Sofas of LA'
Los Angeles residents are far from the only ones to dump old sofas by the curb, but their appearance can seem more arresting when set against the typically sunny backdrop. One local artist, Andrew Ward, created the “Sofas of LA” project to catalogue the appearance of these sofas.

The neighborhoods where he’s spotted sofas range all across the city and county, as the practice of leaving furniture out is not dictated by any sort of socioeconomic status. Some of the recent neighborhoods where Ward has photographed sofas include Garvanza, Silver Lake, Hermon, Glendale, Mar Vista, Glassell Park, Venice, and many more.
Ward captures these photos on his Instagram page, as well as his Tumblr. In May, he shared that he’s been assembling the photos for an upcoming photobook, obviously titled “The Sofas of LA.”
It’s unlikely anyone could tour the array of couches Ward’s photographed, since they’re usually removed within a week of being tossed by the curb. Nevertheless, the map of different neighborhoods around the city could make for an interesting weekend tour, especially if you need a sofa.
