Award-winning commercial architect Edwin Brantley Smith has put his personal University Park mansion on the market for $2.99 million.

Built in 2002, Smith’s sweeping architectural creation was one of the first ultra-contemporary mansions built in University Park, according to Candy’s Dirt.

“He designed this home with a great deal of passion and integrity to operate with ultimate efficiency for his family and for entertaining,” Jean Bateman, the listing agent for Briggs Freeman Sotheby International Realty, told Candy’s Dirt.

The three-story, 5,954-square-foot mansion is filled with luxurious features and functionality. In addition to a chic gourmet kitchen, four bedrooms, five bathrooms, two powder rooms, and a three-car garage, the main living area includes an open and airy feel with glass walls, plenty of natural light, a fireplace, and a soaring 24-foot ceiling. The 1,000-square-foot third floor — with a media room, game room, and art studio — is the family’s favorite place in the house to hang out.

The outdoor living and entertainment area is a brilliantly designed extension to the mansion, which contains water features, a hot tub, resort-style pool, and alfresco cooking station enhanced by a 62-year-old live oak tree and greenery.

“Most people design their homes to sit on the back patio and look out from the home,” Bateman said. “You look towards the back of another house or at power lines. He designed this house so you sit in the back area and look toward the house.”

Smith included several energy efficient components in the mansion. He built the house to LEED standards six years before Leadership in Energy and Environment Design was available for residential use, and glass throughout the mansion is designed for solar optimization. The border of the mansion is wrapped in limestone, a climate-control texture that keeps interiors cool in summer and warm in the winter.
