Developers recently broke ground on a new 33-story, mixed-use high-rise tower in Downtown Oakland. The building will bring more than 250 homes, as well as commercial space, to the corner of 17th and Broadway. It’s also nestled in between two BART stations, making this a prime location for housing, according to Curbed SF.

The downside? This tower will be located right next to the Academy of Chinese Culture, which is also the site of a beloved mural called “Vintage,” which was painted by anonymous street artist Believe in People (BiP). The mural depicts an elderly woman rocking out to thrash metal music. While the mural will remain after the tower is finished, it will be largely out of view.

While BiP rarely gives interviews, spokesperson Michael Atto expressed an interest in working with builders to continue the tradition of street art in Oakland. Atto also said that BiP is grateful for the opportunity to have work showcased their work for the public in Downtown Oakland.
