San Jose’s Berryessa District wants to turn its major transit hub into a major transit-oriented development. Per East Bay Times, plans for Market Park San Jose transit village will include office towers, thousands of housing units, grocery outlets, restaurants, and shops.

Western National Group, which recently purchased 6.5 acres of vacant property from Berryessa Properties, will reform the Berryessa Flea Market site into the one-stop, mixed-use development. The flea market will eventually move to a new location, such as the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo welcomes the project, telling the East Bay Times he is hopeful it spurs private investment into all aspects of the “pedestrian-centric urban village.”

Current plans could mean that 9,800 to 11,000 people will have the opportunity to work and commute from one of the five planned towers, each of which will rise between 10 and 12 stories, along the south side of Berryessa Road. Non-residents could also commute to work here from anywhere on the BART line including Pleasanton, Oakland, San Francisco, and Pittsburg.

The project could get a jumpstart on another major transit village planned by Google and partner Trammell Crow near Diridon transit station in Downtown San Jose. If both projects come to fruition, the city of San Jose could see drastic changes in terms of population and workforce in the years to come.
