Pleasant Hill’s new library finally has a designer as well as a direction.

Per the East Bay Times, the same architecture firm behind Apple’s flagship glass store in New York City, will be designing Pleasant Hill’s newest library.

For famous firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, who also have Seattle’s Ballard Library and Syracuse University’s Maxwell School on their list of projects, the library’s space will be a place for community engagement, flexible rooms with multiple uses, and high-end technology.

Council members have expressed the desire for showstopping looks combined with high functionality. The community library wish list is rather lengthy, including a 25,000-square-foot facility, conference and study rooms, a teen area, a children and family area, a bookstore, outdoor seating, and self-checkout kiosks.

The contract is not signed but is set to be reviewed mid-October. Construction is expected to begin in early 2020 once the design is approved. After that, the $15-$20 million project is said to be ready a year from groundbreaking.

Contra Costa County and the Pleasant Hill Recreation and Park District partnered on the deal for the library, in which the county gave three acres of the former Oak Park Elementary school site to the city in order to build.
