According to a report by LA Weekly, Burbank’s Pickwick Gardens may be razed and replaced by hundreds of townhomes and apartments. Pickwick Gardens owner and CEO Ron Stavert announced at a recent neighborhood meeting that he intends to demolish the property and build residential units in light of current declining revenues.

Pickwick Gardens sits on eight and a half acres of land off of Riverside Drive, and currently holds a bowling alley, restaurant, ice rink, banquet hall, and gardens.

As LA Weekly points out, however, Stavert’s intentions do not necessarily seal this course of action for Pickwick Gardens. Overcrowding near the site is a concern, with 1,750 new housing units already in the process of being added within a two-mile radius. Plans would have to go through city environmental impact and traffic studies as well.

With Burbank growing rapidly at the moment, portions of the city are trying to avoid the perils of growing too fast. Burbank is on pace to add 15,000 jobs over the next 18 years but has added just 55 housing units since 2011. Its downtown area has already begun pushing toward a more centralized city center with the construction of over 1,000 new housing units.
