Caltrans is exploring ways to help mountain lions and other wildlife living near Liberty Canyon in Agoura Hills. Called Liberty Canyon Wildlife Crossing, the transportation department hopes to build an overpass that stretches throughout the US-101 at Liberty Canyon so wild animals can safely cross. Primary objectives include reducing the number of wildlife deaths while improving safety for drivers and motorists traveling through the freeway.

According to the renderings from Caltrans’ environmental assessment, the bridge would be cohesive with the surrounding desert, and it’ll most likely be covered with plants

Even though other states have successfully implemented wildlife bridges, this will be the first in California. If it’s constructed, it would also solve the issue of inbred mountain lions in the area, which has become an issue in recent years as the populations have been unable to mix.

Santa Monica Mountains Fund and The National Wildlife Federation have already begun raising money for the wildlife project. If they meet their funding requirements, construction on the long-awaited overpass will begin in 2022.
