Tamarack Avenue and Carlsbad Boulevard meet right at Carlsbad Beach, a critical juncture for the oceanside San Diego County city. Carlsbad has big plans for renovations and improvements to make traveling in that area easier and, per The Coast News, they’ve released those plans in order to get public feedback.

Per the city’s website, the plans call for widening sidewalks, adding bike lanes, adding free on-street parking, adding a new crosswalk, and adding a three-lane road over the lagoon inlet just south of the beach. The plan also recommends reducing Carlsbad Boulevard to three lanes, one southbound and two northbound, between Tamarack and the lagoon bridge.

Not included in the plans is a roundabout at the intersection, which was once considered a good way to ease traffic flow but has since been disregarded. The sloping topography along Tamarack Avenue as it nears Carlsbad was considered a bad fit for that type of intersection.

The proposal now goes before the public in a trio of meetings between Dec. 7 and 9. If the city eventually does sign off on the proposal, construction could begin as soon as fall 2018. The work is expected to take eight months, which would mean it wraps up just in time for the summer season. The city has budgeted $2.9 million for the project.
