The powerhouse of duo Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and wife Dr. Priscilla Chan have partnered with San Francisco-based company Landed to provide $5 million in assistance to help teachers buy homes in the Bay Area.

Per SF Biz Journal, Landed assists homeowners who are otherwise unable to come up with hefty down payments and connects them with investors, who then share up to 25 percent of gains or losses after the home is sold or the mortgage is paid off after 30 years.

Recipients of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative for home-buying are 60 teachers in the Redwood City School District and Ravenswood City School District in Redwood City, as well as the Sequoia Union High School District in East Palo Alto. The funds, available immediately, will provide up to $120,000 toward down payments.

Recognizing home costs are skyrocketing for teachers, who are essential to a community’s growth, the movement to provide affordable housing in San Francisco and other Bay Area cities is on the rise. It’s near-impossible for a teacher’s salary to pay for a house in Redwood City, which has a median home value of $1.35 million, or even Palo Alto, which has a median value of $756,000. Lack of new housing options can also be equated by San Mateo County adding 54,000 new jobs since 2010, but only 2,148 new housing units.

Landed's CEO Jonathan Asmis told the Biz Journal that these kind of initiatives are needed in order to make it “a little easier for hard working families to step into homeownership. We need to try new, market-based approaches to improve access to expensive housing for those who serve our communities."
