Chicago Park District's First Community Orchard Will Grow in Rogers Park
The Chicago Park District will plant its first community garden at Triangle Park in Rogers Park, according to DNAinfo.
This project will bring fruit trees and a sculpture garden to the park, which is located in Roger Park’s North Howard area. The Chicago Park District is partnering with the Willye White Park Advisory Council to bring the project to fruition. The project team hopes local schools and neighborhood groups will pitch in to help care for the orchard once it is planted.
Triangle Park has been largely unused in the past, although it does have a few tables and plenty of trees. The new orchard and a recently added bike path – which links Evanston and Edgewater – that run through the park could bring more visitors.
Once the orchard’s trees begin to bear fruit, the Chicago Park District invites the neighborhood’s residents to pick and eat it.
The city has a few other community orchards, but those community areas were established through donations. The orchard in Triangle Park will be the first directly organized by the Chicago Park District.
