The Oakland A’s recently settled on a 13-acre parcel of land currently owned by Peralta Community College as the site of their upcoming Major League Baseball stadium. Now, concerns are mounting about the possible impact the project might have on surrounding neighborhoods.

Oakland’s Planning Department issued a memo to the City’s Planning Commission, warning that the potential development may cause residents and developers “to speculate on nearby properties in the Chinatown and Eastlake neighborhoods,” according to a Socket Site report. The memo mentions that these real estate pressures could worsen an already severe housing crisis in Oakland.

To help quell speculation and cushion the impact of the Oakland A’s development plans, a set of proposed development controls for the area surrounding the ballpark site has been drafted. The controls include requiring proposed developments to issue notifications to all occupants within the area’s boundaries. They would also regulate the formal design review of proposed demolitions of any area structures.

Oakland’s Planning Commission will review the proposed controls. If adopted, they will remain in place for at least the next two years or until a more permanent set of regulations is decided upon.
