Construction has stalled on the highly anticipated mixed-use development Fancher Creek in Fresno.

Last year, excitement grew when two parking garages with more than 800 spaces were built at the construction site. Big box retailers, new restaurants, and a movie theater were soon to follow.

However, per the Fresno Bee, developers have pumped the brakes on the project because they want to get it right.

Developer Ed Kashian and partner Tom Richards of The Penstar Group told the Bee that the project’s infrastructure must connect to the surrounding neighborhood, and that means being diligent about installing utility lines correctly and making sure water drains properly, which takes time.

Some part of the Fancher Creek project remains in the design stages but more underground work will begin toward the end of the year. Full-blown construction will begin in mid-2018, with an expected opening date in early 2019.

Once the project is complete, the town center will offer 970,000 square feet of commercial and retail space, housing, and a park. There will also be a substation of the Fresno Police Department along with a Bus Rapid Transit station for easy commuting. The developer is also asking the public for suggestions on what else should be included in the town center via their website.
