A new mixed-use hub is coming to Culver City after ground broke on the property in early November.

The intersection of Culver Boulevard and Washington Boulevard will eventually house the Culver Steps, encompassing 40,000 square feet of retail space at ground level, plus 75,000 square feet of office space, and a 35,000 square-foot public area. Currently, the space is a parking lot across the street from a Trader Joe’s. However, the ambitious project — which Curbed LA says could be completed in 2019 — is about to make things a whole lot busier.

Though Culver City has a downtown stretch near the site, it’s largely comprised of restaurants and bars. Public space is limited to nearby sidewalks and benches. With the Culver Steps, the area would be transformed into an outdoor space where locals can gather right at the entrance of downtown.

Curbed details that the plans for Culver Steps (originally proposed by Hudson Pacific Properties) were approved in 2012, and then taken over by Hackman Capital Partners when the firm purchased the development rights last year.

Culver City’s website also provides mock-ups of what the open space — which anyone can use — would look like. Included are many steps, ample grass areas, and seating areas, some of which will be shaded.
