In May, the Edgewater Historical Society started a petition to save the Woodruff Arcade in north Edgewater, but unfortunately, the 1923 structure looks to be slated for demolition. According to a recent report from Curbed Chicago, the Edgewater Woodruff Arcade at 6361 N. Broadway St. will likely become a mixed-use development.

The building was sold in early 2017 and the new owner, Borekci Real Estate, announced to tenants that they had to vacate by the end of the year. The space is home to 14 businesses, including a Planned Parenthood, a bookstore, and dentist office.

Despite the push to pursue a protected landmark designation, 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman told the Edgeville Buzz that it might be too late. In a De. 7 article, Osterman said he has been in talks with the developer in an effort to maintain the historic nature of the building.

Located at the intersection of Devon, Broadway, and Sheridan, the alderman believes that the ground floor retail will have a positive impact on the community. In addition to the retail, the seven-story building will have 58 apartment units.

The Woodruff Arcade is a unique building that is the last of its kind in the nation. It features a two-story courtyard with a glass skylight that runs the length of the structure. It also has a walkway on the second floor with a walkable balcony. The design is considered to have influenced the modern mall.

The building’s design is still being finalized and has gone through at least three design revisions so far. Osterman told Buzz that the developer is interested in working with the community on the design of the building.
