Golden Gate Park's Historic Koret Playground Will Be Rebuilt After Vandalism
Contract negotiations are underway in a bid to rebuild Golden Gate Park’s historic Koret Children’s Quarter Playground. Large parts of the playground, located on the park’s southeast side near San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury and Cole Valley neighborhoods, tragically burned down last summer. Authorities are still calling it an act of vandalism by an unknown arsonist. It will cost an estimated $1 million to repair all the damages.
Connie Chan, Deputy Director of Communications at San Francisco Recreation and Parks, told Hoodline that the department received a round of bids, and is now negotiating with a prospective builder to get the playground back up and running. The San Francisco Parks Alliance also is holding a community fundraiser to help offset some of the repair costs.
The space is one of the nation’s first public playgrounds and was originally constructed in 1888. Per Curbed SF, there’s no estimated timeline yet for when the repairs will finish.
