Three low-income families will soon get the chance to buy a home asking $100,000 below the market rate, a rare opportunity in the Bay Area’s competitive real estate climate.

The project allowed developer Denova Homes to build additional houses in the Driftwood neighborhood in exchange for affordable housing.

According to an East Bay Times report, the three homes are all 2,500 square feet and will feature four bedrooms and two-and-a-haf baths. The fixed price of all the homes is set at $398,850. The market rate in the area is currently between $515,000 to $535,000.

To be eligible for one of the homes, families must make 80 percent of the Contra Costa County median income. A family of three must make below $72,400, and a family of four must make below $80,400. The minimum down payment is three percent, or $11,966. Potential buyers may also qualify for a $15,000 loan from the Federal Home Loan Bank’s WISH Program. The best part is that after five years the loan is forgiven.
