A historic Andersonville home has officially been saved from demolition, according to a recent report in the Edgeville Buzz. The home at 1436 W. Berwyn Ave. has been sold to a family who plans to restore the property.

Aidan Development purchased the property with intentions to demolish it and construct a multi-unit condo building on the site. Following the release of the plans, community members voiced their concerns and more than 500 residents petitioned to keep the structure as is. In May, the East Andersonville Residents Council voted to oppose the home’s demolition.

Along with Ald. Harry Osterman, the Andersonville/Edgewater community banned together to maintain the property and following the plea the developers decided to reconsider the plans. In early fall developers offered a one-month grace period to secure a buyer before moving forward. Broker Maureen Murnane found a buyer who plans to renovate the home and keep the structure as is.

As Chicago rents increase and the Andersonville and Edgewater neighborhoods grow in popularity, the real estate landscape continues to shift. The Chicago Tribune recently reported on a 188-unit building in Edgewater along Lake Michigan that is prime to be the city’s largest sale and condo deconversion.

In this case, the deconversion of the units would include renovations of the building’s interior and within the units. The sale is still in the works.
