In 2014, renderings by Natoma Architects showed off the possibility of adding six new stories atop the historic two-story building at 1033 Polk Street in the Van Ness/ Civic Center area of San Francisco. Currently the home of the Rigpa San Francisco, a Tibetan Buddhist Meditation Center, plans called for the front of the existing building to be renovated while the new additions would rise from the rear three-quarters of the site. The new section would have included nine condos, roughly 1,875 square feet of office space, and 1,300 square feet of retail space on the ground floor. The most visually-notable portion of the new structure would be the balconies, which would be needed to meet the city's required open space rules. No parking was planned even though current codes required it.

For a couple years it seemed as though the plans were forgotten but SocketSite reports that "the formal application...has since been submitted to Planning" though the updated proposal seems to have shifted more towards the residential. Revised plans now call for 19 units and only 605 square feet of retail space. Apparently the owners are shopping the proposal instead of working to build it themselves, asking $4.2 million for both the property and their plans.

We'll have to wait and see if these plans have any takers and, if so, the city lets them build an addition as proposed. Otherwise, someone might need to submit some new ideas.
