A Wall Street Journal report citing sources close to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) indicates that Los Angeles will likely lose its 2024 Olympic bid to Paris. As a result, however, the 2028 Games will be held in LA instead.

A decision could come as early as June 9 of this year.

The potential decision to push LA’s bid came after reports that France was not in the running for the 2028 Games, and Los Angeles could use a little more time to build the facilities it needs to hosts the games.

LA 2024’s proposal calls for more temporary construction to support the event around the county. Temporary sports park renderings for facilities in Encino and Long Beach were released in May. Two additional sports parks are also set for Downtown LA and Carson.

That said, the 2024 Olympic timeline was also setting the pace for infrastructure improvement projects throughout the area — especially around the various rail systems. While the altered timeline to 2028 would create less rush to complete those projects, things may also be a little less “new” in LA when the games arrive four years later than initially intended.

WSJ says that LA mayor (and member of the LA 2024 committee) Eric Garcetti is willing to accept the four-year delay, provided the IOC makes it worthwhile for Los Angeles and the United States Olympic Committee. There are no indications of what those incentives may be at this time, however.
