January could bring expanded borders to the town of Sahuarita as they await approval for annexation of the La Posada retirement community in Green Valley, according to the Sahuarita Sun.

The inclusion would add 700 residents and approximately $250,000 in state-shared revenue while La Posada residents would gain the right to vote in town elections and participate in council meetings. The Sahuarita Police would take over jurisdiction from the Pima County Sheriff's Department, though the Green Valley Fire District would still handle fire-related cases.

Other changes defined by Sahuarita Town Manager Kelly Udall call for the town to take over public works at La Posada’s entrance at the Continental Road intersection. That includes the addition of a stop light, which would be added to the town’s 2018 budget

Though plans are moving forward for La Posada, other businesses aren’t as enthusiastic about the possibility of being incorporated into the town. Udall has said that some are opposed to the idea because of a two percent commercial lease fee, while others feel the move establishes “no perceived benefit.”

La Posada expects to make a decision at their board meeting in January but admits that legal reviews are still underway.
