The governing board of Laney College has ordered the Oakland A’s to stop plans to build a new ballpark on the school’s land. According to SF Gate, the move has caught the team by surprise.

The Oakland A’s had settled earlier this year on the site near Laney College as the ideal spot for the team’s new home. The site currently houses the Peralta Community College District’s offices. For months, the team has been talking to neighborhood leaders and business owners in an effort to create a community benefits plan as they embark on building a new ballpark, originally slated to open by 2023.

The board of trustees of the Peralta Community College District directed Chancellor Jowel Laguerre to end community engagement talks with the team, and instead focus on what is best for the district and its students.

A’s president Dave Kaval previously said there was no plan B if the Peralta site did not work out, and it is currently unclear what the team will do.
