LA's Sixth Street Park Plans Taking Shape With Three Options
The $449-million bridge that will replace the Sixth Street Viaduct in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles remains underway despite some delays. As part of the new construction, $1.9 million was donated to create an arts plaza underneath the bridge. That park is now under environmental review and a recent presentation provided details as well as three distinct visions for what it might look like.
First Concept
The first concept calls for a promenade, which provides a fairly straightforward path surrounded by trees and gardens, and makes room for a youth soccer field that juts out.
Second Concept
The second concept is called “canopy and objects” and creates more of a meandering, windy pathway through the greenery. The gardens and fields would take on spherical forms.
The Third Concept
The third concept is called “episodic” and integrates smaller paths throughout, with green areas blocked off into their own distinct sections.
Regardless of the design, each one calls for the same amenities, which include athletic fields, playgrounds, fitness areas, walking and bike paths, performance areas, a dog park, and a community building.
Planners are looking to the community for feedback and have a public meeting scheduled for May 3.
