Master Layout Revealed for Central Park in Glendale
According to documents submitted to the City Council, the City of Glendale has partnered with the Armenian American Museum and Cultural Center of California to redevelop Central Park. SWA Group, the internationally recognized landscape architecture firm tapped to design the project, recently released a master plan detailing the property layout as well as upcoming park components. The planned project site is situated west of the city’s famous Americana shopping outlet.
New additions to the community park include a museum, an educational center with galleries and a theater, redesigned public greenspaces, and recreational facilities. Many of these aspects would serve the public needs of the future museum, as well as the existing Downtown Central Library, and adult recreation center.
More specifically, plans for the redevelopment call for the creation of community open space at the heart of the park, the expansion of an existing paseo on Brand Boulevard, the establishment of a second paseo (with terrace) to connect Colorado Street and the new open space, maintenance of the site’s existing Sycamore and Pine trees, and a new garage entrance from Colorado Street.
Project coordinators estimate that Central Park’s existing open space totals to approximately 76,000 square feet. However, after evaluating the park’s unused pockets as well as expanded space for the proposed museum, the redevelopment is expected to add an estimated total of 47,600 square feet to the property.
Per Urbanize, the city hopes to use the space for community events including outdoor concerts, small neighborhood programs, festivals, and even a seasonal skate rink.
