Otay Ranch, which is in Chula Vista, the second-largest city in the San Diego metropolitan area, is about eight miles from both Downtown San Diego and the Mexican border. The city’s name is Spanish for “beautiful view,” which best describes this scenic region between the San Diego Bay and the coastal mountain foothills.

The Location

On the eastern edge of Otay Ranch, residents can see the city lights of Tijuana as only a wide canyon separates the two countries. The South Bay Expressway is a toll-road extension of state route 125, which easily connects to multiple major highways in town. Interstate 5 begins its route to the north through the western edge of Otay Ranch. It connects the area to the northern part of San Diego and provides a direct path to Los Angeles.

Tourism is a viable economic commodity in this region, as Otay Ranch offers numerous dining, shopping, and outdoor attractions that provide a memorable experience. The area’s school district is highly rated and is considered one of the best in San Diego County. Like many other Southern California cities, Chula Vista is home to multiple public and private golf courses.

Some of the more popular local community events include the Starlight Parade, the Lemon Festival and the Chula Vista Rose Festival. Plans are in the works to build an urban center that gives new residents of Otay Ranch a valuable resource to familiarize themselves with their new surroundings.

The western end of Otay Ranch consists of a series of shopping centers, which are a few miles apart on Eastlake Parkway. The more popular shopping centers are the Otay Ranch Town Center and the Marketplace of Windingwalk. The Chula Vista marina is located in South Bay and home to the Chula Vista Yacht Club. The area is best known for sports fishing and whale-watching charters that operate out of the marina’s docks.
