When people call Los Angeles a big city, they're not kidding. There are many different neighborhoods, each with its own unique culture and a group of residents telling you where to eat, what to see, and where to go when you visit the famous La La Land. Most often, people will tell you to head to Hollywood Boulevard or do some celebrity watching in WeHo - rarely do they tell you to venture out to the valley. Studio City is changing that. Studio City is exactly what you think it is - it's home to CBS Studios and was named after the studio lots of the 1920s.

Now the area is star studded (George Clooney, Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, and more have homes there) and known as one of the best-kept secrets in LA - it's the perfect place to get away from the crowds and keep a low profile. Here are some of my favorite places to go in the area:

Alfred Coffee

Alfred Coffee isn't a secret - their slogan "but first, coffee" has taken over the social media world. The popular coffee shop recently opened up their newest location in Studio City and it is definitely a must-visit cafe. Unlike other Alfred locations, this valley newcomer has a more laid-back, throwback vibe and feels like you just stepped back in time. Mark this as one of my favorites, with food from Cafe Gratitude, cold brew on tap, and ample outdoor seating. Not to mention, Alfred is located right the middle of the Studio City Sunday farmers market - if you're ever looking for me on a Sunday, this is where I'll be.

Find Fresh air at Fryman Canyon

Starting out Saturday or closing a weeknight with a quick hike through Fryman Canyon is one of the best activities in the area. The three-mile loop is located right off of Laurel Canyon and is perfect for both beginners and advanced hikers (or runners) who want to get out and get some fresh air in the big city. Plus, you get some killer views of the valley and don't have to dodge the crowds at Runyon Canyon. Disclaimer: some celebs even hit this spot, but I didn't tell you that.

McConnell's Fine Ice Cream to satisfy your sweet tooth

This one is a must. There are a few different ice cream places in Studio City (not to mention, Salt & Straw just moved in on Ventura) but McConnell's is numero uno in my heart (and stomach). The flavors are magical - from Boysenberry Rosé Milk Jam to Sea Salt Cream & Cookies and seasonal favorites like pumpkin and eggnog.

Hit Happy Hour at Black Market Liquor Bar

Ask someone for a happy hour recommendation in Studio City and they'll most likely give you the same answer: Black Market. This cozy gem is right in the heart of Studio City on Ventura Boulevard and is home to some top-tier mixologists - you get the perks of a popular West Hollywood bar (sometimes you'll even spot a local celeb or two) without the crowds. Not sure which drink to try out? You can't go wrong with any of their fancy cocktails but my personal favorite is the Red Hot and Bothered (heads up, it's packed with spice).

Shop 'til you Drop on Ventura Blvd.

Those who think that Rodeo Drive is the only place with great shopping haven't been to Ventura Boulevard. They have all of the popular shops like Lululemon and American Apparel, but the local boutiques with low prices steal the show. Grab breakfast or lunch (Comoncy and Granville are some personal favorites) and spend a half-day or so walking up and down the street. With great views and even better shopping - Studio City is living proof that the valley isn't so bad after all.
