Mission Street in Bernal Heights Gets Meaningful Pop-Up Art
Following fires in the Bernal Heights area, Mission Street has received a “Wizard of Oz”-inspired piece of artwork.
Per Curbed SF, an anonymous artist placed a message along a chain link fence near 3300 Mission St.
The words “There’s no place like” were spelled out in orange and red paper woven in and out of a fence next to a lot where a fire occurred this time last year. The line was left incomplete on purpose, leaving the meaning open to interpretation. When the wind blows through the artwork, the red and orange paper spins.
The now-empty lot sits next to a charred building, scarred from the fire at this spot that displaced almost 200 residents of the surrounding area.
Controversies around the cause of the fire had locals up in arms since so many fires have happened in a short amount of time. Some have claimed arson but fire and city officials have stated that they’ve ruled that out.
Members from Galería de la Raza and Secession Art and Design helped with the completion of the piece.
