Mayor Bowser cut the ribbon on Tuesday, Dec. 12, for the mixed-use Hine Project development near Eastern Market. According to a press release the project is at the site of the former Hine Junior High School.

The Hine Project will include four buildings. Altogether, the buildings will bring in 162 housing units (including 46 affordable units and 17 for seniors), 160,000 square feet of office space, and 60,000 square feet of retail space. Among future retailers will be a preschool and a Trader Joe’s grocery store.

The Hine Project, which was led by the Office of Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, doesn’t stop at buildings. The community will gain a space for the Advisory Neighborhood Commission in the 700 Penn building, the press release noted. An outdoor plaza was reopened in November. The Capitol Hill Flea Market and the Flea Market at Eastern Market operate on that plaza on Saturdays and Sundays, respectively. A community playground is in the works, led by Barracks Row Main Street.

Developed by EastBanc and Stanton Development, the project has also created around 2,500 construction jobs and 700 permanent jobs.

“Our teams worked together with the community and developers to ensure that we honored the historic roots of this neighborhood and provided much-needed multi-generational housing, retail and community serving amenities,” Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Brian Kenner said in the press release.

“We are committed to delivering affordable housing, jobs, and community resources to every corner of our city, including our most historic and established neighborhoods like Eastern Market,” Mayor Bowser said in the press release. “With the Hine Project, we are building on the progress we have made and giving more residents access to a tremendous, resource-rich neighborhood.”
