NASA and the U.S. General Services Administration are getting closer to building at least 1,930 housing units within the NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field in Mountain View, according to the Mercury News.

The two federal agencies are now accepting proposals at fedbizopps.gov and rfphousing.arc.nasa.gov/ from “a qualified lessee to construct and operate” the residential units.

It was first announced back in September that 10 percent of the new housing campus would be devoted to affordable units. NASA Ames Research Center stated that those who work or go to school on its property would get priority in the new units. There are as many as 8,000 workers who would qualify for priority access, including NASA civil servants and contractors.

Mountain View City Manager Daniel Rich said he supports the housing initiative, and he also encourages NASA to offer an even higher percentage of affordable units. Rich also raised questions about the development’s impact on local traffic, schools, and city services. He suggested exploring the annexation of that land into Mountain View and said that he looks forward to discussing these issues further with NASA.
