Cyclists in South LA can rejoice. In an effort to make Los Angeles more bike-friendly and improve street safety, the Department of City Planning has filed documents to add new bicycle lanes on four busy streets: Hoover Street, Broadway, Avalon Boulevard, and Main Street.

Here’s what the new lane implementation will look like according to plans:

Hoover Street

There are currently two lanes for vehicles going in each direction. However, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation will reconfigure them into one lane for vehicles in each direction with a two-way center turn lane. The remaining space will go to installing bike lanes in each direction spanning for three miles between Vernon Avenue and Manchester Avenue.

Broadway

There are currently three lanes for vehicles going in each direction. The lanes will be reconfigured into two lanes for vehicles in each direction. The remaining space will go to installing buffered bicycle lanes going in each direction spanning one mile between Manchester Avenue and Century Boulevard.

Avalon Boulevard

There are currently two lanes for vehicles going in each direction. The lanes will be reconfigured into one lane for vehicles in each direction with a two-way center turn lane. The remaining space will go to installing bike lanes going in each direction spanning 6.4 miles between Jefferson Boulevard and 120th Street.

Main Street

There are currently two lanes for vehicles going in each direction. The lanes will be reconfigured into one lane for vehicles going in each direction with a two-way center turn lane. The remaining space will go to installing bike lanes in each direction spanning four miles between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and West 92nd Street.
