New Edgewater Bike Lanes a Step Toward More Cohesive Biking Network
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is taking a step toward addressing the city’s fragmented network of bike paths with the Edgewater Neighborhood Bikeway Network project. This initiative will focus on adding a few miles of bike lanes that will create a more connected bikeway in the neighborhood, according to Streets Blog Chicago.
The Edgewater Neighborhood Bikeway Network initiative will also involve parts of Andersonville and Uptown. The project hopes to create a network of bike paths that give increased access to local businesses and connect with transportation stations. The new paths, which will connect with many existing bike paths, are planned for both commercial and residential streets, according to the report.
Earlier this spring, a new bike lane opened on Glenwood Avenue through Edgewater and Andersonville.
The project is getting a lot of support from the community. Alderman Harry Osterman (48th Ward), local businesses, and community organizations are working with CDOT to execute the project’s vision, according to the report.
“What we’ve seen downtown is that when you build a connected network, a lot more people start riding. So we’re working in Edgewater, in a very small area, trying to develop this network quickly, putting in a full-build network, using a combination of local and federal money,” said CDOT planner Mike Amsden, according to the report.
