A residential housing boom is underway in Newark, after years of little to no development. Between 2000 and 2015, only four houses were built in the East Bay city. In the past two years, however, 700 houses have been built and 1,400 have been approved or are under construction, per The East Bay Times.

City leaders say new residents are especially drawn to urban-style housing options close to public transit. In the next few years, they plan to build a new transit station with parking for around 400 cars to keep up with the demand.

The city is also using revenue from the increase in new builds to improve services and infrastructure. In May, the Newark City Council raised development impact fees to support infrastructure like road improvements, increasing public buildings, and spaces, and to maintain police and fire services.

Last year, William Lyon Homes’ unveiled Bayshore homes and townhomes. The Newark development, located next to the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, is now showing 187 detached model homes and 360 townhouses, starting from $700,000.
