Newly Renovated Theater on the Lake Reopens in Lincoln Park
Earlier this year, Lincoln Park’s Theater on the Lake – located at Fullerton Avenue and Lakeshore Drive – underwent a $7 million renovation project. Now, the theater has reopened, and it will be able to host productions year-round for the first time in its long history, according to a CBS Chicago report.
The 19,000-square-foot, Prairie-style building has been standing since the 1920s. First, the building was a place for children with tuberculosis, eventually becoming a theater in 1953. Previously, the theater was only able to stage productions during the warm months.
Architecture firm Kaufman | O’Neil and Demarsh Construction led the theater overhaul. The Chicago Park District and Lakefront Hospitality Group now operate Theater on the Lake.
The newly opened theater has enclosed glass windows, an event space, an outdoor patio, and a bar. Theater visitors can also enjoy food from the Lakefront, a full-service tavern.
“This is the next icon along the lakefront. You have South Shore [Cultural Center], you have Soldier Field, of course you have Buckingham Fountain, and now once again Theater on the Lake is going to be synonymous with great iconic structures full of life along the lakefront,” said Chicago Park District Supt. Mike Kelly, per CBS.
