Miami might be known for its vibrant culture and luxurious real estate, but it’s also one of the most dangerous cities in America to be a cyclist. Now, an ambitious plan emulating the infrastructure genius of the Danish hopes to elevate Miami as a biking city.

Architect Bernard Zyscovich’s Plan Z would connect Miami with the island town Key Biscayne via an elevated bicycle path. Currently, cyclists pedal across the five-mile-long Rickenbacker Causeway that boasts gorgeous views of the Miami skyline and Biscayne Bay, but as Citylab points out, at least three cyclists have died on the throughfare since 2010.

Plan Z would be similar to the Cykelslangen in Copenahagen, a striking bike bridge that runs over a harbor.

The Miami bike lane would be protected by rails and painted with a bright traffic cone orange. The path would include an observatory so bikers can stop and take in the views, as well as a 20-acre waterfront park.

If the flashy plan comes to fruition, what is now a dangerous biking city could be a model for other cities looking for ways to create bike-friendly cultures.
