When a couple purchased a 900-square-foot cottage and adjacent lot in Dolores Heights with plans to tear it down and build their 5,600-square-foot dream home, it riled up the neighbors something fierce. They’re back with redrawn plans, but this time they’re going even bigger.

Per Socket Site, revised plans for 323 Cumberland St. were recently submitted and approved for a two-unit building measuring 6,800 square feet. That’s significantly larger than the first design and massive compared to the existing cottage that was recently demolished.

John Maniscalco Architecture submitted the design, which calls for a 6,100-square-foot main unit over a 680-square-foot basement unit. The property will also include a 1,600-square-feet garage, which is itself much larger than many homes in the area.

The owners are a couple who both worked for Facebook, one of whom was one of the company’s original female engineers. They purchased the cottage property and adjacent, undeveloped property for $3.55 million in November of 2012.

Though the property has been controversial since selling, the new and already approved plans were likely passed because they were marketed as more “compatible with the surrounding neighborhood density by proposing two units on a double-wide lot.”
